Suicide car bomb hits US convoy in Baghdad

A suicide car bomb detonated on Monday near a US military convoy in Baghdad's western district of Yarmouk, causing casualties among the US soldiers and wounding four Iraqi civilians, witnesses said.

"A car bomb went off as a five-vehicle US convoy passed by at about 2:00 p.m. (1000 GMT), in Baghdad's western Yarmouk district, destroying a US Humvee and causing casualties among the US soldiers," Ali Abdul-Rahman from Eikrima medical center for cripples told Xinhua.

"I saw a US helicopter landing at the scene and evacuating some wounded soldiers," Rahman said.

Among the four injured civilians are a two-month-old baby and a 11-year-old girl who were wounded by smashing window glass in one of the nearby houses, he added.

The blast took place a few meters away from a governmental building affiliated to the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity and close to the headquarters of the Iraqi Islamic Party, a major Sunni party, he said. It was also close to the local council of Yarmouk district.

Earlier, another witness said the car bombing targeted a governmental building which was damaged by the blast.
