Latest statistics from the Ministry of Labor and Social Security show there are six gaps in Chinese resident's income.
1. Whole society's income:
The Gini coefficient: higher than 0.4- the upper limit of a reasonable gap.
2. Resident's income:
The annual growth rate for urban residents is 8 percent to 9 percent; the rate for rural residents is 4 percent to 5 percent.
3. Industries:
Annual average salary for government employees is approx 16,000 yuan; the annual average salary for employees in institutions is approx 15,000 yuan; 14,000 to 15,000 yuan for employees in enterprise; the number exceeds 60,000 yuan in large industries.
4. Occupation:
Managerial positions have an income over 20 times higher than ordinary positions in enterprises.
5. Distribution of wealth:
People with more wealth (accounting for 10 percent of urban residents) possess 45 percent of total urban wealth.
People with less wealth (accounting for 10 percent of urban residents) possess 1.4 percent of overall wealth.
6. Finance distribution, labour distribution :
China's finance revenue: 1.3 trillion yuan in 2000; 2.6 trillion yuan in 2004.
Ratio of salary against GDP: 16 percent in 1989; 12 percent in 2003.
