Iranian FM says US turns to multilateralism to save itself in Iraq
font size

Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazi said on Thursday that the United States has just turned to multilateralism from unilateralism to save it from the current embarrassment in Iraq, the official IRNA news agency reported.

"The Americans after being tied up in Iraq and after the differences with Europe understood that they cannot proceed in this way," Kharazi was quoted as saying in an exclusive interview in Brussels.

"They have now decided that others should help them. So now they are coming to multilateralism. They want the international community to help Iraq," Kharazi added.

The top Iranian diplomat was in Brussels to attend the international conference on Iraq co-hosted by the European Union (EU) and the United Sates on Wednesday.

He stressed that the main aim of the conference was to show political support to the new transitional government in Iraq.

Kharazi held bilateral meetings with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana on the sidelines of the conference.

"We discussed regional developments and bilateral issues, elections in Iran, Iran's nuclear program, Iraq and Lebanon," he said in the interview.

Iran has been keeping a close watch on neighboring Iraq since the downfall of former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein.

Tehran strongly calls for an end of foreign occupation of Iraq, terming it as source of turbulence in the country.
