Under the sponsorship of the Laiyang Agricultural College, a breakthrough has been made in the "high-yield and water-saving cultivation technique for growing wheat in dry land". With this method, the wheat yield per mu (0.067 hectares) surpasses 650 kilograms without any irrigation.
Experts believe that technique can produce at least 15 per cent more wheat on average without any water irrigation and it saves fertilizer and labor.
The technique is suitable for the field in Shandong province and the winter-wheat-growing dry land areas along the Yellow River- Huai River and Haihe River which is one of the most important grain production region in China, said Professor Lin Qi, project director and the Department of Agronomy under the Laiyang Agricultural College. The technology will be promoted around Shandong as a major agricultural achievement.
