Hardliner Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has won the 9th Iranian presidential election and vowed Saturday that he would seek to create a "modern, advanced and Islamic" role model for the world.

The ultra-conservative Tehran Mayor made the remarks in his first taped public statement after his surprising landslide victory in Friday's run-off against his rival former president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani.

Broadcast on state-run radio, Ahmadinejad's statement said that he would try to create a "modern, advanced and Islamic" role model for the world.

He also said the Islamic Republic's "enemies" had been "checkmated" by his shocking victory, calling for national reconciliation after the vote.

"Today, all competition should turn into friendship. We are part of a big family that should go hand in hand to build our proud Iran," the president-elect said.

"Our big mission today is to build up an exemplary, developed, powerful, Islamic society in Iran."

Iranian Interior Ministry released the final results of the run-off on Saturday, confirming that Ahmadinejad had won 17.24 million votes, or 61.69 percent of the total votes counted.

Ahmadinejad had won 17.24 million votes, which accounted for 61.69 percent of the total eligible votes while his rival former president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani had garnered over 10 million votes, which made up 35.92 percent of the total, state television quoted a report of the ministry as saying.

Turnout of the runoff voting stood at 59.72 percent, the reportadded.

The runoff election voting was held on Friday. Rafsanjani and Ahmadinejad entered the second round of contest after they topped the list of candidates in the first round of voting on June 17.

However, in the first round, Rafsanjani stood ahead of Ahmadinejad with 21 percent of the total votes against the latter's 19 percent.

Ahmadinejad is viewed as a young representative of the hardliners in the country.
