Denmark, one of the most sceptical countries toward the EU years ago, has been undergoing changes which put the country among the most positive toward the EU, Ritzau news bureau reported on Monday.

Denmark's role as a foot-dragging, sceptical partner in the European project seems to be undergoing a change, according to a new survey of member countries and their confidence in EU institutions printed in trade magazine I Dag.

The study, which was conducted by the EU's statistics office, concluded that Danes' confidence in the EU's minister council, commission and parliament is higher than in other EU countries.

Danish enthusiasm for the EU will continue to grow, expected Catharina Soerensen, who studies popular support for the EU at the Danish Institute for International Studies.

"Denmark was known as one of the most EU sceptical countries just a few years ago. Now the situation has changed so that Denmark is one of the only countries in the EU where support for the union has grown," she said.

According to Soerensen, Spain is the only place where support for the union exceeds that of Denmark.

"Fear that the EU will develop into a 'United States of Europe' is not as widespread today," she said.

Danish support for the union stands in contrast to EU countries like France and the Netherlands, where voters recently rejected the constitutional treaty, the survey said.
