A suicide car bomb killed a US soldier and wounded another in Iraq on Tuesday, the US military said.

The soldier assigned to the Task Force Liberty was killed at about 11:40 a.m. (0740 GMT) near a US military base in Balad, 80 km north of Baghdad, the military said.

The name of the victim was being withheld until the next of kin were informed, they said.

At least 1,735 US soldiers have been killed in Iraq since the US-led invasion in March 2003, according to media tally.
