Ten more polio cases found in Indonesia: WHO
font size

Spokesperson of the World Health Organization's (WHO) branch in Indonesia said on Tuesday that 10 new cases of polio have been found in Indonesia, putting the total cases of the crippling disease to 65.

"The 10 cases were found in West Java province and Banten, bringing the total cases to 65," spokesperson Sari Setiogi told Xinhua by telephone.

The spokesman said that the number of infected children in Indonesia could rise as there were still many blood samples being tested for children whom never get the vaccination.

The Indonesian Government has been launching a massive polio vaccination campaign, targeting 6.4 million children in the province of West Java, Banten and Jakarta on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The outbreak of the crippling disease re-emerged in May after Indonesia declared polio-free in 1995. The first case was found in Sukabumi Regency, West Java Province, about 100 kilometers from Jakarta.

The virus of the disease in Indonesia was reported to be similar with those found in Yemen and Saudi Arabia.

Indonesian Health Ministry said that the virus might have been transfered by migrant workers or Haj pilgrims who visited Saudi Arabia before returning to Indonesia.
