UN investigates secret US prisonsUnited Nations human rights experts have begun investigating allegations that US terror suspects are being held in secret locations. This includes the questioning of former terrorist suspects released from the United States detention. UN special expert on torture, Manfred Nowak, made the comment Wednesday in Vienna. Nowak is also director of the Vienna-based Ludwig Boltzmann Human Rights Institute and is one of several independent human rights experts appointed by the U.N. Human Rights Commission. Nowak cited "persistent and credible" reports of US secret prisons holding terrorist suspects on ships in international waters. But, he said the UN human rights experts need more evidence to prove such reports. He told Austrian Broadcasting Company earlier that the US might also have other secret prisons on US ships in the Indian Ocean to hold terrorist suspects, in addition to the detention camp in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
