Iran urges to include developing nations' concerns in UN reform plan
font size

Iranian President Mohammad Khatami on Saturday stressed that the concerns of the developing nations should be included in UN reform blueprint. the official IRNA news agency reported in Tehran.

Khatami made the call in a letter to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan on Iran's stance on the UN reform, the official IRNA news agency reported. "The UN reform should guarantee collective decision making for international community, which can take into account opinions of the developing states in administration of the world body," Khatami was quoted as saying.

In the letter, Khatami lauded Annan's initiatives and efforts to carry out his reform agenda to enable the world body to succeed in the face of new challenges.

He, however, also criticized the reform plan, proposed in March, for favoring big powers and failing to observe the developing countries.

The current blueprint included factors which provide the big powers with "pretext to proceed with actions in line with their hegemonic objectives", Khatami said.

He told Annan "your excellency's blueprint on UN reform could not satisfy aspirations of the developing nations so far and their need of just peace, international security and sustainable development."

"What has been overlooked in this report is the threat posed to the international community by the arsenals of the world big powers producing weapons of mass destruction," Khatami said.
