British Prime Minister Tony Blair on Thursday condemned the serial blasts that ripped through central London early in the morning as "barbaric" terrorist attacks, vowing "our determination to defend our values and life is greater than those engaged in terrorism."

"It's reasonably clear there have been a series of terrorist attacks," Blair said in a speech to the nation. "Whatever the terrorists do, they will not succeed."

Blair, who is in the Scottish resort for the summit of the Group of Eight (G8), said he would return to London in a couple of hours, but would fly back to the Gleneagles meeting later on Thursday.

He said the G8 summit and discussions on Africa and climate change will continue in his absence.

Altogether six blasts hit London underground stations and buses during rush hour on Thursday morning. So far two people have been confirmed dead and at least 90 others injured. The entire underground railway network and bus service have been suspended.

The metropolitan police chief said the blasts were probably a major terrorist attack but he was not aware of any warnings in advance.
