British authorities conclude Egyptian biochemist has no role in bombings
font size

British authorities have concluded that an Egyptian biochemist arrested was not involved in the July 7 London bombings, a senior security source was quoted by the al- Ahram daily as saying on Tuesday.

Egyptian authorities last week detained Magdy el-Nashar, who has denied any role in the attacks, which killed 56 people and injured more than 700.

The daily quoted the security source as saying that Nashar gave full security cooperation with the British side, which was convinced from questioning carried out by Egypt that Nashar had no role in the explosions.

But Nashar could not be released at present, added the source. " The question of his release will be dealt with after the end of questioning."

Nashar, a 33-year-old biochemist who lives in England, returned to Egypt four days before the London bombings.

Nashar had admitted he had rented his flat in the Leeds area to one of the four suicide bombers, said the source.

Following his arrest, the Egyptian authorities have denied Nashar has any link with the al-Qaida terror group, which was behind the devastating bombings.

According to an Egyptian security source, Scotland Yard investigators had arrived in Cairo to probe the case, but no information has filtered out on the part played by British police in the inquiry.
