A pair of Siamese twin girls who were born to a mother of Nigerian descent in an Athens hospital on Wednesday, are believed to be in a serious condition, doctors said on Thursday.

The baby girls are currently being treated at the Aglaia Kyriakou Childrens' Hospital in central Athens and have been put on artificial respiration.

Specialists are now investigating the case, unprecedented in Greece, since it is unclear whether the twins have vascular problems.

Doctors have confirmed that the babies do not have a shared liver but there is a possibility that they share the same large intestine.

It has not been decided whether they will be separated by Greek doctors or sent abroad for operation.
