Some performers from the Peking Opera Troupe in Shanghai left for Denmark on Sunday to take part in the summer drama festival on Hamlet slated for late July.

This was the first Peking opera troupe to be invited to attend such a occasion, said Shi Yukun, director of the Hamlet troupe with the Shanghai Peking Opera Troupe.

"Both Shakespearean drama and Peking opera are the products of the poetic art. However, the Peking opera Hamlet have made some adjustments in terms of playwright, direction and performance," Shi said.

By adding four folding screens and five chairs, the Peking opera Hamlet designs to illustrate a number of scenario such as the palace, the fortress and the graveyard.

Shan Yuejin, deputy head of the Peking Opera Troupe of Shanghai, said the Peking opera Hamlet was targeted at Chinese college students, with the aim of encouraging more college students to be keen on Peking opera.

Consequently, actors and actresses in the Hamlet troupe are people with age below 25, Shan said.
