Musharraf rules out Pakistan's link to blasts abroad
font size

Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf has said his country has effectively dismantled al-Qaida 's command and control structure, making it impossible for the network to use the country's soil for planning and carrying out terror attacks in any part of the world.

Musharraf has also stressed that it is totally incorrect to link Pakistan with the terror attacks abroad in any way, Dawn reported Tuesday.

"Our military, police and other law-enforcement agencies have completely shattered al-Qaida's vertical and horizontal links and smashed its communication and propaganda set-up. It no longer has any command, communication, and propaganda structure in Pakistan," Musharraf said while addressing a press conference Monday in Lahore, capital of Punjab province.

He said the Pakistani military and law-enforcement agencies have arrested 700 al-Qaida members, occupied their sanctuaries in the tribal areas of Waziristan, and dismantled their command and control structure in the country.

"Al-Qaida is on the run in Pakistan," he said, claiming it takes the organization at least one to two months to convey any message vertically or horizontally due to the destruction of its structure.

"Therefore, it is absolutely baseless to say that al-Qaida has its headquarters in Pakistan and that terror attacks in other parts of the world , London, Istanbul, Sharm el-Sheikh, Africa, etc., in any way originate from our country," Musharraf emphasized.

"I often wonder how can they (Al Qaida) carry out terrorist action in London or Egypt from here," he said, adding it is totally incorrect to link Pakistan in any way with such acts.

He observed the world must understand that al-Qaida no longer exists in Pakistan and it has become an international phenomenon, a state of mind.

This phenomenon, Musharraf said, could not be defeated by military means alone. For ultimate success (in the war against terror), the world must resolve political disputes (involving Muslims) to deal effectively with this phenomenon and change this state of mind, he affirmed.

"It is now for the world at large to use the other instrument -- resolution of political disputes -- to deal with this phenomenon for good," he said.
