France warns of "negative" consequences if Iran resumes nuclear activities
font size

France warned again Iran Wednesday over "negative" consequences if it resumes its controversial nuclear activities.

"Iran knows the consequences if it begins activities that have been suspended till now, which can only be negative for Iran," French Foreign Ministry's deputy spokeswoman Cecile Pozzo di Borgo said.

Outgoing Iranian President Mohammad Khatami affirmed earlier in the day that Teheran would resume some sensible nuclear activities. The announcement came at a time when the European Union is considering new proposals regarding Iran's nuclear issue.

Pozzo di Borgo also said the EU will stand by its commitment regarding Iran. The European troika -- France, Germany and

Britain -- promised on May 25 in Geneva to give Iran a whole package of proposals in the fields of politics, security, economy, technologies and nuclear.

"We are determined to meet this commitment," she said, adding this European offer "will allow a more open perspective for new relations between Iran and Europe."

The EU troika has warned Iran if it resumes either conversion or enrichment activities, they would back the United States to appeal to the United Nations Security Council for possible sanctions.
