Chirac warns of putting Iran's nuclear issues to UN
font size

French President Jacques Chirac told visiting Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon that France favored a referral of Iran's nuclear issue to the United Nations Security Council if Iran does not give "objective guarantee" on definitive abandon of sensible nuclear activities.

France wants to obtain the guarantees that Iran abandon all activities in fissile material fabrication, under the control of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Chirac's spokesman Jerome Bonnafont quoted him as saying.

"If it is not the case, the issue will be handed to the United Nations Security Council," Chirac added.

This new warning came after Iranian outgoing President Mohammad Khatami declared earlier in the day that Iran decided to resume its uranium conversion activities, which would be the first step to resume the uranium enrichment.
