The remains of the young Brazilian man shot dead in London by British police agents who mistook him for a suicide bomber arrived home on Thursday.
A commercial flight carrying the coffin of Jean Charles de Menezes was received by officials, friends and relatives upon arrival at the Sao Paulo Airport.
The coffin was then put aboard a Brazilian airforce plane, which took him to the city of Governador Valadares, from where a vehicle from the local fire-fighting services brought him to his hometown of Gonzaga, in the southeastern state of Minas Gerais.
A funeral for Menezes has been set for Friday. Officials are calling on local people to attend the funeral of the young man whoworked as an electrician in Britain before the tragic accident took his life.
Mario Mamede, representative of Brazilian President Luiz InacioLula da Silva, said that the violation of human rights remains unacceptable even in the fight against terrorism.
Menezes, 27, was shot dead last Friday by plain-clothed Scotland Yard agents a day after a bomb attack which caused no casualties in the London subway system. London citizens and policewere on edge after July 7, when three blasts in London subway and one on a bus left 56 dead and some 700 injured.
British police tightened security after the two attacks. Mistaken for a terrorist, Menezes, 27, was chased through the London subway and shot repeatedly, seven times in the head and once in the shoulder.
The accident sparked wide-spread anger among Brazilians. Many Brazilian groups believe it to be a deliberate act of warning against immigrants in Britain, despite an apology by the British government which attributes the incident to error.
