Arroyo urged to go to kitchen of every household to boost image

A pro-administration Filipino lawmaker Saturday called on President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo to go to the kitchen of every household in the next six months to help people solve their problems of daily necessities.

Representative Jeoy Salceda said at a press conference that the next six months will be extremely critical for Arroyo to survive the political crisis and win back the confidence of the people.

Salceda said the president will have to "bring herself to the kitchen of every household" to win back the public's confidence.

"She would have to impose profound changes to win back public trust. By this, I mean she would have to address the ordinary problems faced by her constituents," he said.

The lawmaker said that among the national concerns that Arroyo would have to address are the high cost of medicine and the lack of other basic services for the people.

"The president needs to provide plain and concrete solution to the problems faced by the multitude. If she could solve these problems, she would be better felt by the public," Salceda said.

He said Arroyo would also have to enhance the programs already being implemented by the government.

"It would also be good for her to push her current projects to their critical thresholds to provide results for the people," Salceda said.

He said these steps would boost the president's popularity which has been deflated by local survey ratings.

Arroyo's image got an unexpected boost Friday when a survey conducted by Forbes Magazine listed her as the fourth most powerful woman in the world, after US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Chinese Vice Premier Wu Yi and Ukraine Prime Minister Yulia Tymshenko.
