Australia snapped Lithuania's three-game winning streak at the Stankovic Continental Champions Cup basketball tournament with an upsetting 109-96 victory over the European champion in Beijing on Saturday.
Argentina beat the host and Asian champion China 86-66 later on Saturday to keep alive its title hope. Argentina and Lithuania have both collected three wins against one loss at the six-team round-robin tournament with the last round slated for Sunday when Argentina play Puerto Rico and Lithuania faces Angola.
Glen Saville made five three-pointers in six attempts to lead Australia to its second victory in four games. Saville finished with game-high 31 points plus 6 rebounds and 6 steals while CJ Bruton, who was 3-for-4 from beyond the arch, added 25 points.
"We are playing without some big guys who went to the NBA training camps, so we turned to our outside shooters," said Australia head coach Brian Goorjian. "Glen and CJ were able to make the shots and they were hot in this match."
Australia finished 16-for-24 from beyond the arch.
"Our players got tired after yesterday's hard match against Argentina," said Lithuania head coach Valdemaras Chomicius. "Thus we were slow in offense and defense today and it's too easy for them to score."
Lithuania squandered a 19-point lead in the first half before holding off Argentina 83-77 in a match between title favorites on Friday.
Going into the second half 51-41 up, the Australians held a double digit lead in most the last two quarters. Lithuania pulled within 99-91 just over two minutes left, but a three-pointer of Saville and two free throws from Bruton pushed Australia to an unshakable 104-91 lead one minute and 21 seconds from the end.
Coming off a 83-77 defeat to Lithuania on Friday, Argentina started strongly against the host and Asian champion. Paolo Quinteros made four three-pointer in the first quarter to lift the South Americans up to a 29-16 lead.
The Chinese managed to pull within 35-27 in the second quarter, but that's the closest they could get. Going into the second half with a cushion of 47-35, Argentina improved to 65-43 amid the third quarter and never looked back.
In Saturday's other action, Angola beat Puerto Rico 90-73.
Australia, Angola and China all stood on a 2-2 record while Puerto Rico has yet to find a win.
