US journalist killed in southern Iraq

Gunmen shot dead a US journalist in Iraq's southern city of Basra, police said on Wednesday.

The freelancer, Steven Vincent and his female Iraqi translator, were kidnapped on Tuesday evening in al-Istiqlal Street, in central Basra, the police said.

The gunmen killed Vincent, who works for the Christian Science Monitor and The New York Times, but his translator was alive, the police added.
