EU nuclear proposal violates agreement: Iranian official
font size

An Iranian diplomat said in Tehran on Friday that the European Union (EU)'s proposal on Iran's nuclear program submitted earlier in the day violated the agreement reached by the two sides, the semi-official Mehr news agency reported.

"Despite the EU's earlier pledge to offer a comprehensive proposal, the new plan does not explain how Iran is to realize its right to conduct peaceful nuclear activities," the diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity, was quoted as saying.

"The proposal is inconsistent with and in clear violation of the Paris Agreement. The Islamic Republic's inalienable right to enrich uranium has not been mentioned in these proposals, and the EU is still insisting that Iran halt its enrichment-related activities," he said.

Under the Paris Agreement, Iran suspended all activities related to uranium enrichment in November 2004 and opened negotiations with the EU trio -- Britain, France and Germany.

However, the talks came to a deadlock in the following months due to the uncompromising stances of the two sides.

The EU insisted that Tehran permanently halt uranium enrichment which the United States charged was being used by Iran to make atomic bombs.

Iran rejected the accusation, saying that it would never give up its legal right to peaceful nuclear activities under the Non- Proliferation Treaty.
