India and Pakistan agreed Saturday to inform each other about planned missile tests and set up a hot line between the secretary level of the two foreign ministries, a joint statement said.
"The two sides reached an understanding on the proposed agreement on pre-notification of flight testing of ballistic missiles," said the statement. A hot line will be established in September to prevent misunderstanding and reduce the risk of an accidental nuclear conflict, the statement said. "The result of the talks is the agreement on the pre-notification of the ballistic missile tests," said Meera Shankar, additional secretary in India's Foreign Ministry, after the two-day talks.
The agreement will push forward the peace process that seeks to resolve their most contentious dispute over Kashmir.
The dialogue between the two countries was part of a tentative peace process that began in January 2004 and has led to the improvement of ties between India and Pakistan.
