Britain detains 10 foreigners suspected of posing threat to national security
font size

British authorities on Thursday detained 10 foreigners suspected of posing a threat to national security, the Home Office said.

In a statement, Home Secretary Charles Clarke said the presence of the 10 unnamed foreign nationals was "not conducive to the public good."

"Following months of diplomatic work we now have good reason to believe that we can get necessary assurances from the countries to which we will return the deportees so that they will not be subject to torture or ill-treatment." Clarke said.

The 10 foreigners were detained in operations in London and the West Midlands, Bedfordshire and Leicestershire regions.

The British government has recently unveiled new anti-terror measures after two bombing attacks on London's transportation system in July.
