Indonesia, Malaysia hold emergency talks on choking haze
font size

Indonesian Forestry Ministry Malam Sambat Kaban Thursday held an unscheduled meeting with his Malaysian counterparts to seek mutual solution over the choking haze from Indonesian forests that blanketed peninsular Malaysia in recent weeks.

The closed-door meeting with Malaysian Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Pieter Chin Pak Chui and Minister of Environment Adenan Satim was held at the VIP room of the Polonia Airport in North Sumatra Capital of Medan, reported the Antara news agency.

Kaban said the meeting aimed to seek solution to reduce the thickening haze from Indonesian forests that shrouded Malaysia but he didn't elaborate.

He admitted that forest fires tended to increase in the Sumatra provinces of Riau and North Sumatra and on Kalimantan island.

The Antara news agency quoted him as saying there had been 200 hot spots detected in several provinces and they would potentially increase in number this month.
