Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra on Saturday expressed his condolence over the death of Sri Lanka's Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar.

"I am shocked to have learnt the sad news about the assassination and passing away of Mr. Lakshman Kadirgamar," the Thai prime minister said in a statement.

"On behalf of the government and people of Thailand, I extend my sincere condolence and profound sympathy to ...Mrs. Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, President of Sri Lanka," he said.

Thaksin condemned the assassination of the Sri Lank minister as "criminal and barbaric act of violence."

Thai Foreign Minister Kantathi Suphamongkhon on Saturday also extended his condolence to the Sri Lank government.
