10 Taliban militias killed, 14 detained in Afghanistan
font size

At least 10 Taliban militias were killed and 14 others were detained in past three days in Afghanistan, according to Afghan and US military sources.

Troops of Afghanistan National Army (ANA) eliminated six suspected Taliban operatives and captured 13 others in the insurgency-hit southeast Paktika province late last week, a press release of Afghan Defense Ministry said Sunday.

"A clean up operation in Wazokhah district of Paktika province on Thursday led to the killing of six Taliban and arresting 13 others," the news released added.

Thirteen assault rifles were also seized from the militants, the statement of the Defense Ministry added.

However, it gives no more details if there were any important Taliban figure among the dead of captured militants.

Paktika, and the neighboring provinces of Khost and Paktia in the southeast Afghanistan along the border with Pakistan, once Taliban's stronghold has been the scene of increasing militancy since early this year.

According to the US-led coalition forces, at least four Taliban insurgents were killed and one was captured Friday in Uruzgan and Kabul respectively.

Three insurgents were killed and two Afghan National Police were wounded during a firefight near the city of Deh Rahwod in southern Afghanistan's Uruzgan province on Friday, said the coalition in a news release.

The fight occurred as Afghan and US forces, patrolling in the area, came into contact with an unknown number of insurgents, it added. One insurgents was detained during the incident.

Meanwhile, one insurgents was killed during an attack south of Kabul in which an improvised explosive device was detonated as an Afghan and US military convoy passed.

There were no Afghan or US forces injured and only minor damage to one military vehicle.

Taliban, who vowed to derail the historic parliamentary election slated on Sept. 18, has intensified attacks against Afghan government and US troops. Around 800 people, including US and ANA troops, insurgents and civilians were killed in the violence.

On Saturday, the US and Afghan troops launched a big offensive against insurgents in the eastern Kunar province close to Pakistani border to root out militias in the mountainous areas.
