More than 3,000 people from all walks of life gathered at the Memorial Hall of Compatriots Slaughtered in the Nanjing Massacre Monday to commemorate the 60th anniversary of China's victory in the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression (1937-1945).
"Japanese militarists unconditionally surrendered to the just forces in the world, including China, on the same day 60 years ago," said Luo Zhijun, secretary of the Jiangsu Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China, at the gathering. "That we bear in mind history and the past is for looking into the future and cherishing the peaceful environment, speeding up modernization and contributing to the world peace and development."
Participants to the gathering rang a big bell of peace and walked around the memorial hall, holding red candles, to pay tribute to more than 300,000 Chinese people who were massacred by invading Japanese troops in 1937.
Japanese invading troops occupied Nanjing on Dec. 13, 1937 after fierce combats with Chinese army, and then launched a six-week long massacre. Historical records showed that more than 300,000 Chinese people, not only disarmed soldiers but also civilians, were massacred in the holocaust.
