The Indonesian government plans to facilitate a reconciliation process between former separatist rebels and community members following the signing of a peace agreement with the Free Aceh movement (GAM), a local official said on Wednesday.
"We will facilitate the process across Aceh through clerics and traditional leaders," Antare news agency quoted Aceh Acting Governor Azwar Abubakar as saying in Banda Aceh, capital of Aceh province.
He said the government's task after the signing of the peace agreement is extending amnesty to former GAM members and promote reconciliation.
The government will also seek the best ways to deal with former rebels regarding their livelihood, he added.
"We will discuss the problem after the former rebels return to the fold and make an empowerment program for them based upon the potentials in their respective districts," he said.
He said the government will involve all components of the community including non-governmental organizations in the effort.
According to Azwar, the most important thing to do now is socializing the points in the agreement among the community. However "we still have yet to discuss about it with the central government," he said.
The Indonesian government signed the peace agreement with GAM on Monday in Helsinki in a bid to end the three decades conflict in Aceh, in which about 15000 people had been killed.
