Philippine president sets ultimatum to illegal gambling
font size

Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo ordered on Monday the total eradication of illegal gambling activities called "jueteng" by Sept. 15 through law enforcement.

The government officials warned "jueteng" operators that they would be dealt with the "full force of the law" if they would not stop their illegal doing.

Arroyo delivered the order after "jueteng" operations resumed in some areas after only a few months of inaction, according to press secretary Ignacio Bunye and anti-jueteng leader Puerto Princesa Mayor Edward Hagedorn.

Hagedorn said the Philippine National Police had done a good job in stopping "jueteng" and the government would provide alternative livelihood to those who would be displaced by the anti- jueteng drive.

President Arroyo earlier said that the "jueteng" operations had been reduced to almost zero after her administration declared an all-out war against all forms of illegal gambling.

The President said she would stop the illegal gambling operations after she and her family members were accused of benefiting from them. She said even her husband, son and brother- in-law would not be spared from the investigation into "jueteng".
