Uzbek parliament approves govt decision to evict US troops
font size

Uzbekistan's parliament on Friday gave final approval to the government's July 29 order evicting US troops from the Central Asian country.

The 93 members of the upper house present at the session voted unanimously for a motion backing the government's order that the United States withdraw its troops within six months from Karshi-Khanabad, an air base in southern Uzbekistan.

Many legislators also demanded compensation from Washington for environmental damage caused by the US military presence in the country.

The US troops used the air base after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in the name of waging an anti-terror war in neighboring Afghanistan.
