China has developed a number of science parks to boost the development of regional economy in the Yangtze River delta, the Pearl River Delta, and the Bohai Sea Ring areas, Vice Minister of Science and Technology Ma Songde said in Beijing Friday.
Speaking at a national working conference on science parks, the official said that the formation of these clusters of hi-tech development zones helps save resources and infrastructure, and can also reduce the cost of transportation.
China is building up world-class science park clusters in the above-mentioned three areas, with Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen expected to act as high technology hubs for these three areas, according to the official.
Ma's views were backed by other speakers.
Shang Yuying, deputy director of Shanghai's Pudong New District, said that Shanghai, which boasts a highly efficient government and low investment costs, is playing a leading role in the Yangtze Delta area and helps drive the economic development of neighboring Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces.
Huang Xingshen, vice mayor of Xi'an, capital of Shaanxi Province, said his city has economic advantages in defense, high technology, service industries and biological medicine.
Its hi-tech industries are boosting the economies of the surrounding areas, Huang noted.
