Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said the Nigerian government would seek foreign technology to improve its power supply sector, the official News Agency of Nigeria reported Monday.
Abubakar was quoted as saying that the Nigerian government had so far signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with a Chinese firm to build the Mamibilla hydropower dam.
He said the Mamibilla hydropower project "is expected to generate over 4,000 megawatts of electricity."
The vice president said the proposed hydropower station in addition to coal-burning thermal power stations being executed by the government would solve the nation's electricity problems once and for all.
According to Abubakar, Nigeria is to spend 2.3 billion US dollars to build seven power stations. When the seven power stations are completed and put into operation, Abubakar said, the problem of incessant power outage would be solved.
Because of scarcity of power supply and many other factors, Nigeria has lost many opportunities of seeking foreign investments and technologies to modernize the country, a nation with 70 percent of its population living under less than one dollar a day.
