The Sudanese government on Tuesday confirmed its seriousness to end a sixth round of peace talks with rebels in the western region of Darfur successfully.
Second-Vice President Ali Othman Mohammed Taha made the commitment in a meeting here with Salem Ahmed Salem, African Union (AU) peace mediator to Darfur, the official SUNA news agency reported.
Taha was quoted as saying that the Sudanese government had fully authorized its delegation to the Abuja talks to seek a final and successful solution to the Darfur crisis.
He, meanwhile, expressed the government's appreciation to the efforts made by the AU to put an end to the Darfur conflict, stressing that his government would exert utmost efforts to push the union's mission.
For his part, Salem expressed AU's keenness to make the upcoming talks decisive, saying the union is doubling its efforts to unite the Darfur rebel factions to ensure the success of the next round of talks.
He announced that he would visit both Libya and Chad, two supporter countries for the Darfur peace mediation, to incorporate their positive roles to the union's efforts toward a rapid solution to the Darfur issue.
Salem arrived here early Tuesday for a visit to Sudan to conduct consultations with the Sudanese government and the Darfur rebel groups prior to the resumption of the sixth round of talks due on Sept. 15.
Upon his arrival, Salem expressed hope that his visit would contribute in finding a comprehensive and lasting solution to the Darfur issue.
He reaffirmed the need to realize a comprehensive peace in Sudan to boost stability and development in whole Africa.
