England coach Sven Goran Eriksson claimed on Tuesday that Michael Owen will flourish alongside Alan Shearer after joining Newcastle.
The Magpies are on the cusp of landing Owen after the speedy striker agreed terms over a four-year deal on Tuesday.
Owen negotiated his way through a medical and is expected to be unveiled at a press conference on Wednesday.
Eriksson feels Owen will benefit from moving to Tyneside, as it will give him the regular playing time he failed to secure at Madrid, and expects Shearer to provide him with a glut of chances.
"As long as it makes Michael Owen happy it is good for me and England," said Eriksson. "It is a great club and he will play more regularly than he did at Real Madrid and he is happy."
Eriksson has revealed that he spoke with Owen prior to his decision to join Newcastle, but the Swede refused to divulge the content of their discussion.
"He called me," said the Swede. "I cannot say what I said, butI talked to him yesterday evening."
Commenting on Owen's impending link-up with Shearer, Eriksson added: "It is a great partnership. Michael Owen will score goals for them.
"I think it is good for him to play alongside Alan Shearer. I am sure he will give Michael many chances to score."
