Syria voices grief over Baghdad bridge stampede
font size

Syria expressed grief on Wednesday over a Baghdad bridge stampede which killed over 840 people, the official SANA news agency reported.

"Syria has received with pain and grief the hurting news over the bridge of Aaimma in Baghdad today which caused the death of hundreds of sons of the Iraqi sisterly people," a foreign ministry source was quoted as saying.

"Syria, as a government and people, is expressing the sincere consolation and sympathy with sisterly Iraq and victims' families while she is aspiring for the day in which Iraq will enjoy security, stability and prosperity," the source added.

At least 841 people were killed and 323 others injured after a fake suicide bomb alarm triggered stampede on a bridge over the Tigris river in Baghdad earlier in the day, the deadliest incident since the US-led forces launched attacks on Iraq in March 2003.
