S. R. Nathan was sworn in for a second term of office as Singapore's President on Thursday night.
He was re-elected for another six years on the Nomination Day on August 17 as the only qualified candidate for the election.
Nathan read the affirmation of the office of President first, which was witnessed by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and the Chief Justice.
Apart from doing his utmost to discharge his duty, the President said that he will also refine and improve the institution of the Elected Presidency itself.
"I will work with the government and people of Singapore, as we remake our city together, and make this a special place which we all can truly call home," the President noted.
During the solemn ceremony, Prime Minister Lee praised Nathan for his exemplary service in his first term in office, saying that he not only stayed in touch with common people in Singapore, but also enlarged the country's presence in the world.
The ceremony was attended by more than 200 guests, including Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew, Cabinet Ministers, top civil servants and members of the diplomatic corps, as well as the President's family and friends.
Nathan, 81, became Singapore's second elected President in 1999 without any contestant.
This is the third presidential election in the city state since the Constitution was amended to provide for a President elected by the people in 1992.
