Top Chinese judge hopes for farsighted declaration in world law congress

China's chief grand judge Xiao Yang said Sunday in Beijing that he hoped a farsighted declaration would be adopted at the 22nd Congress on the Law of the World.

Xiao, also president of the Supreme People's Court of China, made the remark at a meeting with Margaret Heneberry, executive vice president of the World Jurist Association, who is here to attend the meeting slated for Beijing and Shanghai during Sept. 4-10.

Xiao said the Congress, held for the second time follow the 1990 session in Beijing, is expected to issue a Shanghai Declaration, which will be more farsighted than the Beijing Declaration.

The theme of meeting -- The Rule of Law and Harmony of International Society -- reflected the aspiration of all legal workers in the world as well as the common wishes of people in China and the world, he said.

Heneberry who attended the 1990 Congress in Beijing said she wished the current session a complete success.

Also on Sunday, Xiao Yang met with the chief grand justices and presidents of supreme courts from nine countries, who are here for the meeting, and exchanged views with them on promoting judicial exchanges and cooperation.

The foreign guests are from France, Australia, Japan, Russia, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, the United States, Britain, the Philippines and Zambia.
