The Indian government Tuesday initiated a review of all cases of those detained in Indian- controlled Kashmir, under Public Safety Act and now-defunct Prevention of Terrorist and Disruptive Activities Act (POTA), said a spokesman.
The move comes one day after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh met here with leaders from the moderate faction of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) in Indian-controlled Kashmir.
At the meeting on Monday night, the prime minister agreed that his government would make a time-bound review of all those held under public safety act and now defunct POTA.
The spokesman said following Monday's talks between the prime minister and the five-member Hurriyat team led by its Chairman Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, the home ministry made the proposal.
The ministry accordingly asked the Kashmir authorities to examine the cases and make its recommendations at the earliest for consideration of a joint screening committee, the spokesman said.
Union Home Secretary V K Duggal indicated that the process of review will be completed in a time-bound manner as desired by the prime minister, the spokesman added.
