Hundreds of anti-president protestors calling for the ouster of president Gloria Macapagal- Arroyo on Wednesday afternoon launched their rallies on a main street in downtown Manila, after the opposition threatened to ignite people power revolt against the administration.
EDSA Avenue, the major road leading to the Asian Development Bank became the forum of the anti-Arroyo rallyists, with local TV live-broadcasting their march with banners of slogans calling for the president's ouster.
At least 800 protestors, who are said to be members of the organization named People's Movement Against Poverty, along with other rally group members marched for a mass demonstration at the People Power Monument at 3 p.m. Wednesday, local radio said.
Other separate gatherings were also reported along EDSA Guadalupe and Lacson Avenue.
The protest came after Tuesday's rally led by former president Corazon Aquino calling for the ouster of Arroyo.
Arroyo's political foes said they want to hold a "people's tribunal" in the streets, where they said evidence against her cannot be "suppressed". Several opposition lawmakers vowed to join in the street protests.
The 236-member lower house plenary session voted 158 to 51 on Tuesday to reject the impeachment complaints filed by the opposition, legally ending the issue itself.
Analysts see little chance of another "people power" revolution following those in 1986 and 2001, because the protests have not attracted many middle class Filipinos and the politically influential Catholic Church has refused to take sides.
