Sweden to contribute to TB, AIDS, malaria fund

Sweden will contribute 125 million US dollars to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria during the next two years, Radio Sweden reported on Wednesday.

According to Foreign Aid Minister Carin Joemtin, the Swedish contribution corresponds to 3 percent of the fund's goal.

International donors pledged a total of 3.7 billion dollars to the campaign at a conference in London earlier this week. But the fund's director pointed out that while that is a step in the right direction, it is only half as much as the campaign needs to meet its goals.

Critics singled out the United States for what they say was a paltry contribution of 600 million dollars over the next two years. TB, malaria, and AIDS kill six million people every year, most in sub-Saharan African.
