A senior Palestinian official said on Thursday that a Palestinian-Israeli meeting to discuss the Rafah border crossing control failed in solving the dispute.

The official who spoke on condition of anonymity said the four- hour meeting, which was held late Wednesday in Jordan's Dead Sea area, didn't reach any positive conclusion.

Israel suggested the Rafah crossing on the Egypt-Gaza border be closed from Thursday and a new terminal be built in Kerem Shalom, a proposal rejected by the Palestinian side.

Israel also urged the Palestinians to enforce security on the border between the Gaza Strip and Egypt during the period when the Rafah crossing is closed, which is also rejected by the Palestinians.

Palestinian Civil Affairs Minister Mohammed Dahlan and Planning Minister Ghassan Khatib attended the meeting, while Israeli intelligence chief Amos Gelaad and Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz represented the Israeli side.

The Palestinians demand Israel transfer the control of border crossings to the Palestinians after Israel finishes its whole withdrawal from all Gaza, a process expected to be complete by mid- September.
