Freed Arafat son meets Abbas in Gaza
font size

Freed Manhal Arafat, son of the slain General Musa Arafat, met Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas in Gaza City at midnight Thursday, the official Palestinian TV reported.

Manhal, who was released Thursday night by his father's assailants, arrived at Abbas' headquarters at midnight accompanied by senior Fatah leaders.

Abbas was shown hugging and kissing Manhal, who looked pale, exhausted but smiling.

Abbas headed afterwards to Manhal's home to express grief and offer condolences to his family.

Arafat's funeral will take place after Friday's prayers in Gaza City, where he will be buried.

Militants from the Popular Resistance Committees announced Thursday night that they had released Manhal who was kidnapped after they shot dead his father Musa Arafat at his home in Gaza City on Wednesday.

The group claimed they killed Musa Arafat, a former chief of military intelligence, for his corruption and collaboration with Israel.

The group added that the son was released upon several conditions and a deal was reached between the ruling Fatah movement and the group.

One of the conditions is to end corruption in the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) and return everything taken by Arafat to the owners and put the right man in the right place.

Palestinian security sources said the release was secured after an Egyptian security delegation reached an agreement with the kidnappers.

After that, Fatah Secretary General in Gaza Ahmed Helles, known as Abu Maher, met the kidnappers who handed over Manhal later.
