PNA seeks to reopen Rafah border crossing
font size

The Palestinian National Authority ( PNA) urged on Thursday the international mediators to help find a solution to the fate of the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt.

Israel closed the Rafah crossing, the only exit for Palestinian travellers abroad, in the absence of a deal on monitoring passengers and goods after the Israeli army withdrew from the entire Gaza Strip on Monday.

Israel, for security reasons, suggested that it would relocate the crossing to Kerem Shalom on the borders between Israel, Egypt and Gaza to allow the Jewish state to retain control of Gaza's frontier.

But the Palestinians insisted the crossing must be turned over to the Palestinian-Egyptian control under supervision of a third party except Israel.

Samir Hleileh, Secretary General of the PNA cabinet, said that the Middle East Quartet Committee made up of the U.S. the U.N., the European Union and Russia have to intervene for reopening Rafah crossing.
