A security zone will be established on the Palestinian side of the northern Gaza Strip, the defense ministry said Friday.
The zone, an electronic fence or a wall, will serve as a buffer zone to prevent Palestinian militants infiltrating Israel, a ministry spokesperson said.
Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz ordered to set up the zone after Israel completed its final stage of withdrawal from the Gaza Strip on Monday, ending a 38-year occupation of the area.
However, chaos prevailed in the Egypt-Gaza border following Israel's withdrawal, as tens of thousands of exultant Palestinians shuttled between Gaza and Egyptian towns for family reunion and spending spree.
Israel has urged Egypt to exert tighter control on the border in line with an Israeli-Egyptian deal to deploy 750 Egyptian forces along the border.
