Uganda's ruling party to choose presidential candidate by Nov. 15

Uganda's ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) is to hold its delegates conference in November in which it will elect its candidate who will run for the country's presidential election slated for early next year.

The party's spokesman, Ofwono Opondo, told Xinhua by telephone on Friday that the NRM plans to hold its delegates conference before November 15.

"During the conference which is mostly likely to be held before November 15, the delegates will elect the candidate who will represent the party in next year's general elections," said Opondo.

Opondo however did not comment on whether President Yoweri Museveni will stand for the party presidency following increased calls for him to run for next year's presidency.

There have been calls by sections of Uganda to amend the country's constitution to allow President Museveni run for next year's elections.

This prompted the country's parliament to amend a clause in the constitution which says that a president is only allowed to rule for a maximum of two five-year terms.

Opondo said during the conference, the delegates will also ratify the party's constitution, elect national leaders and also appoint the members who will run the party's secretariat.

He noted that the party will appoint its electoral commission by the end of next week.

Uganda is to hold its presidential elections early next year under a multiparty system of governance.

Political parties in Uganda have been in abeyance for the last 20 years.

However, last July, the country voted in a referendum which allowed the return of multiparty politics.
