A US soldier was killed on Saturday when a roadside bomb struck his patrol in western Iraq, the US military said on Sunday.

A soldier, assigned to the 56th Brigade Combat Team, was killed on Saturday night. The blast hit his patrol near al-Asad Air Base in a volatile insurgent region in western Iraq, the military said in a statement.

The name of the killed soldier was withheld until his family was notified, the statement said.

About 1,900 US soldiers have been killed in Iraq since the US- led invasion in March 2003, according to media tally.
