European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso on Monday urged political leaders of Germany to find a stable solution for the election deadlock.
"I urge German leaders to find a stable solution as soon as possible for Germany. Without a dynamic Germany, Europe cannot recover," said the chief of the executive arm of the 25-nation European Union (EU) while attending a symposium at European Parliament.
According to a spokesperson for the Commission, Barroso was concerned that political uncertainty in Germany would damage efforts to resolve EU rows over the bloc's spending and economic reform.
As Europe's leaders prepare for a critical October summit on the future of the Europe, political maneuvering in Germany could be a key factor.
Officials at EU headquarters have kept a close eye on the outcome of the German elections, which saw a narrow but unclear victory for Angela Merkel's opposition Christian Democrats (CDU).
Both Merkel and incumbent Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder are claiming the right to head the next government.
