IAEA board to vote Friday on EU's resolution on Iran nuke issue
font size

The IAEA board of governors meeting might vote on the draft resolution on Iran nuclear issue put forward by the European Union (EU), a source from the IAEA told Xinhua on Tuesday.

Britain, France and Germany, representing the EU, on Tuesday circulated a draft resolution, calling for reporting the Iran nuclear issue to the U.N. Security Council and General Assembly.

A diplomat from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), who asked not to notify his name, told Xinhua that the discussions between the delegations to the IAEA board are on the way, and he " heard" the vote would be held on the last day of the session, which is due on Friday.

The diplomat said a majority vote, or 18 out of 35 members of the IAEA board, is required to pass the resolution. However, "politically" the EU want widespread support for the move.

The draft resolution, which has been rewritten for several times, also "recommends" the UN Security Council urges Iran to "re-establish full and sustained suspension of all enrichment-related, . .. and reprocessing activity."

It also calls on Iran to observe fully "its commitments" and to "return to the negotiation process."
