Israeli army detains 80 Palestinians in West Bank

The Israeli army continued arrests in the West Bank for the second consecutive day on Monday, Palestinian security sources and witnesses said.

They said that 80 Palestinians were arrested, most of them members and senior officials of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) and the Islamic Jihad (Holy War).

Israel Radio reported that the arrests continued in towns and villages in the West Bank on Monday, and Israeli soldiers and Palestinian militants traded fire in the village of al-Yamoon near the northern West Bank town of Jenin.

On Sunday, 200 Palestinians, members and officials of the two groups were detained after the Israeli cabinet decided to crack down on militant groups, mainly Hamas and the Islamic Jihad.

Hassan Yousef of Ramallah and Mohamed Ghazzal of Nablus, two senior Hamas officials, were among the detainees.
